about
I wrote this song in my final year of acting school, after doing a lot of yoga in a movement class with Anita Miotti. We were asked to create a piece of art expressing our experience in the class, and relating it to life outside the class. Every week I felt like an angry frustrated failure. As a little girl I'd always wanted to be a ballerina, but I quickly learned that I was not graceful or flexible enough, too chubby, etc, etc, etc. I felt betrayed by my body, and as I got older, I betrayed it by trying to master it, conquer it, refine it, beat it into submission. Angry tears kept bubbling up during class and I was frustrated and embarrassed by them. For my project, I wrote this song to remind myself to keep breathing, and to celebrate growth and the support of loved ones.
lyrics
One more breath, one more sigh ,one more reason to cry
One more breath, one more sigh
One more time, just one more time, you’ve got to give it one more try
I’m not broken, I’m just stiff
I’m not hopeless, I’ve got a lot to give
I’m not a failure just because I cry
I might be sad and I might be angry, but I’ll give it one more try
This is love, this is grace
The child inside me searching for her place
This is love, this is grace
These are the dreams that I have lost, the empty space I have to face
I’m not broken, I’m just stiff
I’m not hopeless, I’ve got a lot to give
I’m not a failure just because I cry
I might be sad and I might be angry, but I’ll give it one more try
These friends are comfort, they make me strong
I told myself I could not fly but I was wrong
We are one body, you are my wings
When we come together we do unlikely things
I’m not broken, I’m just stiff
I’m not hopeless, I’ve got a lot to give
I’m not a failure just because I cry
I might be sad and I might be angry, but I’ll give it one more try
So don’t say broken, no don’t say done
I will fight, I won’t give in, I won’t lay down ‘til I have won
I’m not broken, I’m just stiff
I’m not hopeless, I’ve got a lot to give
I’m not a failure just because I cry
I might be sad and I might be angry, but I’ll give it one more try
