about
This is a song about seasons of relationship, told through the eyes of a theatre artist. In the theatre, everyone invests in the mutual experience of telling a story. Deep and important connections are made. Then the run of the show ends. Few of those relationships last. I wrote this song when I suddenly saw my life this way; myself as a revolving door, making deep and important connections that would inevitably end. The conclusion is a choice to believe that these connections matter, regardless of whether or not they “last”. It has also sparked a desire to fight for a few important relationships when running away or hiding seems more natural than allowing myself to be loved long-term.
lyrics
If you were an actor, if this was a play
What kind of scene would we rehearse today?
Would you exhale and stutter as you stared at the floor?
Would you tell me you’re sorry as you head for the door?
Would you tell me you’re sorry to leave me this way?
What kind of scene would we rehearse today?
If I were an actress, if this was a show
If I could imagine how the scene would go
I’d tell you I loved you right there on the stage
The words would be written right there on the page
I’d look in your eyes in the spotlight glow
If I could imagine how the scene would go
And as I grow, one thing I know, that life is like a show
And friends come and go
If I were the playwright and the story was mine
A fairy would heal you and you be fine
And you would be able to look in my eyes
We would not be burdened by looming goodbyes
And we would be able to make up lost time
If I were the playwright and the story was mine
They’re hanging the stage-lights, they’re learning the songs
People are laughing, they’re making new bonds
These moments are precious, they hang in the air
It won’t be long until they’re no longer there
And as I grow, one thing I know, that life is like a show
And friends come and go
(Doo-doo)
If all of my loved ones from each passing age
Were gathered together right there on the stage
One ginormous chorus of friends we would be;
An army of actors, my friends and me
And I’d take a picture to store in my heart
For moments like these, when we’re all far apart
And as I grow, one thing I know, that life is like a show
And friends come and go
I will hang onto this moment, this treasured photograph
Keep the warmth inside although these things don’t last
Cause I will always love you and hold you in my heart
For months and years to come, even when we’re apart
Oohh
Now I know, I also see my friends are here with me
In my heart they’ll always be
